Organic Starter Plants a Success!
Organic Starter Plants a Success!
Transplanted on April 13th, these Organic Red Leaf Lettuce starter plants are doing great! These were planted in a raised bed. The other transplants are doing well, but with all the rain and lack of sun those planted directly into the soil have been slow to grow.

The first harvest of 2014 is this beautiful head of organic red leaf lettuce! To harvest head lettuce, gently hold head and leaves to one side, exposing the stem. Cut off with a knife or extract the hole root to have a living head of lettuce. If you leave the roots intact, make sure they stay moist during storage.

Wash your harvest thoroughly before eating. For lettuce, fill your sink or a bucket with cold water. Fully submerge the head of lettuce, gently bobbing it up and down. Flip the head over and submerge the stem as well, cleaning off any excess dirt. Once clean, place in a colander to dry, then enjoy!
