The holiday season can be such a wonderful time of the year for many people. From spending time with family and relaxing to eating home prepared meals; it can be quite comforting. While stress can be present any time of the year, with normal daily chores and managing bills and money, this time of year can cause quite a bit of stress for a lot of people. With rushing around in heavy traffic for gifts, the schedule juggling to see everyone, party planning, and making sure no one is left out. Let’s not forget the ending of fall semester at schools, which means an abundance of studying and exam taking.
Stress can take a toll on one’s health. Many common health problems are caused by stress and it is usually overlooked when it comes to diagnosing. Stress can cause: tense or sore muscles, headaches, food sensitivities, digestive problems (diarrhea, constipation, gastric distress), chest pain, fatigue, irregular sleep, restlessness, lack of motivation, irritability, depression.
There are many ways to manage stress and alleviate these nagging health problems. The first step is to determine what is causing the stress. This is a very important step in stress management. When one is aware of what is causing stress, it can be easier to eliminate the cause. If you can’t eliminate the cause then talk to someone about it. Venting your stress in a non judgmental environment can have a positive impact on metal health. Say “no” if you are overwhelmed. We are all human and have our own limits. Set limits for yourself and don’t take on more than you can handle. Move your body. Physical activity increases endorphin secretion and it can help reduce tension by warming up the muscles and keeping the blood flowing. Breathe deeply and exhale completely. Slow diaphragmatic breathing can help clear the mind and help you feel more relaxed. Take time for self care. By making time to care for yourself, you are allow yourself to relax and your mind to clear.
